Hot Spot: South Fork, Colorado

July 19, 2012 Staff Blog

For all you Rocky Mountain region riders, young and old, we've picked out one of our Colorado favorites in this week's Hot Spot. Located West of Trinidad, Colorado in the Rio Grande National Forest lies the town South Fork. A small, quaint tourist hot spot for outdoor adventurer's; South Fork is a match made in heaven for friends or families looking for a weekend getaway or just a day-scape.

Keep in mind, it is located in Colorado, so heading to South Fork for a mid-winter ride probably isn't ideal as temps can range from -0 to 40 degrees with snow. But if you have a snowmobile and the right gear, it's a year round retreat. Don't have a fancy motorhome? The town is equipt with great lodges, cabins and motels. South Fork even offers great resturants so you don't have to live off energy bars and fast food meals.

South Fork isn't just for the locals, since it's still Summer break, take the family for a road trip away from the races. You can raft, golf, fish, hike, jeep, camp; whatever your little adventurous hearts desire. Sound like your kind of place? Here are some specs that will help you head to South Fork this weekend:

Elevation- 8,190

  • The riding basics; including a camel back.
  • Slower gearing is preferred.
  • Hand guards
  • Spark Arrestor- You can purchase one at your local bike shop.
  • Trail Map
  • Proper Jetting
  • OHV Sticker- $25
